Mother Mary

(This post was inspired while listening to JJ Heller’s song “Still My Little Boy”.)
As the son rises on this Easter Sunday morning my mind is filled with thoughts of the beautiful sacrifice my Savior gave for me. I’m glad it’s sunny this morning because that’s how I imagine it was on that Sunday morning so many thousands of years ago.
But this Easter, specifically, my thoughts wander to what Mary the mother of Jesus must have been feeling, thinking, and doing. I can’t help but put myself in her shoes and imagine what she must have been going through on that fateful weekend when she lost her beloved, innocent Son to the hands of those who hated Him most.
I can’t help but shutter at the thought of losing my own son and the tears that would seem to never end if anything happened to him. I’d like to think that Mary was surrounded by Jesus’ disciples and that they brought her a small measure of comfort, but nothing can truly replace the presence of one you loved more than you thought was humanly possible.
We do know that as Jesus was dying He entrusted his mother to His disciple John, but there isn’t much more of a reference to her after that (John 19:26-27). In my imagination, He chose to appear to her privately after the resurrection and that they had a reunion that she treasured in her heart. That’s what I, as a mother, hope happened. (I’ll add it to my list of questions I have for Heaven.)
No matter what did or didn’t happen, we know that it broke the heart of the Father to watch His Son die as well. There was so much heartache that fateful weekend that it had the chance to overshadow the beauty of the resurrection morning. I’m so glad it didn’t though! I’m so happy that Jesus refused to lay there in the tomb a moment longer. I’m so thankful that He defeated death for you and me. And I’m at peace knowing that my son can live a life of freedom and joy because of the sacrifice that the Perfect Son made on that beautiful, terrible cross.
May you find His peace on this beautiful Easter morning!
